How to Get the Most Out of Your Incense – Burn Better, Store Smarter

There’s nothing quite like the calming, cozy scent of handmade incense filling your home or space. Whether you’re burning it to set the vibe, for a spiritual ritual, or to just relax after a long day—knowing how to use it properly and keep it fresh makes all the difference.

Here at Cave Hill Wood Co., we make each incense stick by hand, with love, right here in Kentucky. And we want you to get the most out of every single stick!

How to Burn Your Incense the Right Way

You might think lighting incense is as simple as “light and go,” but there’s a little technique to it! Here’s how to get that perfect, long-lasting burn every time:

  1. Light the tip of your incense stick with a lighter or match.
  2. Let the tip burn for 5 to 10 seconds until the flame has caught.
  3. Gently blow out the flame. The tip should be glowing red and softly smoking—if there’s a visible flame, it hasn’t been blown out properly.
  4. Place it in a heatproof, non-flammable burner on a stable surface.
  5. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

🚨 Safety First:

  • Always burn incense in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep out of reach of kids and pets.
  • Never leave burning incense unattended.
  • Use a burner that catches ash and won’t tip over.

How to Keep Your Incense Fresh

Hand-dipped incense is just like anything else handmade—it stays better longer with a little love.

Here are our top tips for keeping your incense smelling amazing and burning beautifully:

  • Store in an airtight container – A mason jar, Ziploc bag, or tin works great. This keeps the scent locked in and prevents it from fading.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight and heat – Excessive warmth can dry out the essential oils too quickly.
  • Don’t mix scents – If you’re storing multiple fragrances, keep them separated. Otherwise, you might end up with a scent that’s…interesting, but not intentional.
  • Use them within 6–12 months – While they last a long time, they’re at their best when fresh!

Final Tip: Create a Ritual You Love

Burning incense can be more than just fragrance—it can be part of your morning routine, a wind-down ritual, or your favorite part of meditation. Find a burner that feels like “you,” pair it with a cup of coffee (you know I will!), and enjoy a moment just for yourself.
