Finding Strength: How Faith and family Helped Me During My Cancer Journey
Hey there, friends. I want to take a moment to share something deeply personal with you—something that has shaped who I am today in ways I never could have imagined. My journey with cancer began in January 2017, and let me tell you, it’s been a rollercoaster ride full of ups, downs, twists, and turns I never saw coming. But through it all, there’s been two constants—my faith and my family.
When I first received my diagnosis of Small Bowel Adenocarcinoma, I was terrified. The word “cancer” has a way of freezing you in your tracks, stealing your breath, and making the world suddenly feel like a much darker place. But even in that moment of fear, I felt a small, still voice whisper to me, “You’re not alone.” And that voice—that gentle reminder—was the first glimmer of hope that would carry me through the years to come.
The truth is, I never imagined that I’d face this battle once, let alone five times. Remission became a word I clung to, a beacon of light in an otherwise stormy sea. But even as I celebrated each victory, there was always a part of me that feared the storm would return. And it did. Again and again.
So, how do I navigate these storms? How do I keep moving forward when everything around me feels like it is falling apart? The answer, quite simply, is faith.
Faith doesn’t mean I’m not afraid. Oh, I am. There are nights when I lay awake, my mind racing with worry, my heart heavy with uncertainty. But in these moments, I turn to prayer. I lay my fears at the feet of a God who I believe is bigger than my circumstances. And every time I do, I feel a sense of peace that defies logic—a peace that tells me, “No matter what happens, you’ll be okay.”
Faith also gives me strength. It gave me the courage to face each new challenge head-on, to undergo treatment after treatment, surgery after surgery and to keep fighting even when I felt like I had nothing left to give. I wasn’t just fighting for myself; I was fighting for my family, for my husband John, for our sons Bradley and Chandler, for our d-i-l Madison, and for my sweet grandbabies, Nevaeh and Ryker. I’m fighting for the life I want to live, for the moments of joy I refuse to give up.
But more than anything, faith gives me hope. Hope that even in the darkest of times, there is a light ahead. Hope that the storm will pass, that I will find calm waters again. And you know what? That hope sustains me. It keeps me going when I want to give up. It reminds me that there is always something worth holding on to, something beautiful waiting on the other side of the pain.
Now, I won’t pretend that faith makes everything easy. It doesn’t. But it gives me a foundation to stand on when everything else feels shaky. It reminds me that I’m never alone, that there is a purpose in my pain, and that no matter how many times the storm comes, I have the strength to weather it.
So, if you’re going through your own storm right now—whether it’s cancer, a difficult relationship, financial struggles, or anything else—know this: You’re not alone. There is hope, even when it feels like there’s none to be found. And faith, even the size of a mustard seed, can move mountains.
Thank you for letting me share my story with you. I hope it brings you some comfort, some encouragement, and maybe even a little bit of peace. Remember, the storm won’t last forever. The sun will shine again.
Until next time, take care and keep the faith.
With love,
Amy
